The project concerned the development of an integrated remote monitoring system that allows ship owners to keep track of the history and state of a ship’s engine operation, with special emphasis on fuel quality and consumption. The system is based on a wireless sensor network deployed in the ship’s engine room, which performs the basic measurements and forwards data to a gateway on the ship. In turn, the gateway transfers data to the ship owner’s headquarters, via a satellite link or 3G/4G, for post-processing, analysis and report generation. The status of the wireless sensor network itself can also be monitored remotely, and nodes can be remotely re-programmed with new firmware. The system has been deployed and is operational in the real world.
