Increasing the Profit of Cloud Providers through DRAM Operation at Reduced Margins

May 7, 2020

Α collaborative work between CSL and the Queen's University Belfast (QUB) on "Increasing the Profit of Cloud Providers through DRAM Operation at Reduced Margins" was accepted at the 2020 International Conference on Cluster, Cloud, and Grid Computing (CCGRID 2020). Due to covid-19 restrictions, the paper will be presented at the CCGRID 2021 conference in Melbourne, Australia.

The paper investigates the exploitation of DRAM margins to improve energy efficiency in data center nodes. Recent studies show that DRAMs are rapidly becoming a major power consumer on servers, already contributing a significant fraction (around 30%) of the total power consumption of the node. The paper introduces a VM scheduling and node configuration policy that exploits these DRAM margins to reduce operating costs without exceeding predefined SLA violations.
